Like almost all myths related to the Hellenic pantheon, that of Hephaestus-Vulcan has a multiplicity of versions. Two wives are attributed to him. One was Aphrodite received as a reward from Zeus for having freed his mother Hera from a prisoner of a magic throne he himself had forged. The other was Gaia, or Gea, the earth itself, on which his sperm fell by mistake, after Athena had escaped from his carnal embrace. Who is the female figure languidly lying in front of the erupting volcano? The sensual Aphrodite-Venus or the powerful and amorous Gaia, guardian of the chthonic forces? S.B.
